Vicky & John – Malcesine Castle Wedding

This was a wedding that won my competition for Make A Wish Foundation. I offered my services for the highest bid and we raised a little money for my charity last year which was good. It was also an amazing day too. England v Sweden in the quarter-finals of the world cup and a Scottish wedding in Italy too – lots of banter, good nature and score checking by the English contingent. All in all, this turned out to be a fantastic day and I got the chance to work with the beautiful mother and daughter team from Italian Lakes Weddings – we always have a good laugh and work well together. As you can see from the above photo which was taken by me from the lake, how could it not be a great day in a location such as this? The two photos below are from bridal prep. The bride and groom hired a small villa a stones-throw away from the castle and as you can see from the shoe shot below, it literally was a stones-throw away. A perfect location for bridal prep in my opinion. Private, close-by and lots more room than a hotel.

The photo above shows the boys in their full kit arriving at the castle and the one below is a nice colour shot of the tartan looking resplendent on the boys! Having spent the full day with them all this group were so friendly and I really enjoyed the company and banter all day. They made my job very easy and pleasurable – good fun!

Look at that amazing veil above! Wow! As you can see, Vicky wore a wonderful dress which I feel was complemented perfectly by her mum’s purple dress too. The day itself was a hot, humid and typically little breeze. I say ‘typically’ as when a bride wears a veil like this, as a photographer, I hope for some breeze so we can get the veil flying! As it happened, it was a heavy veil and the breeze was non-existent, but as you will see throughout this blog post, I managed to get some amazing shots of the bride and groom. For the shot below I have added a filter and wanted to show the wonderful views as the wedding party walks up the castle steps to the wedding terrace.

The photo above and the two photos below are to show the location, scenery, and views from the wedding terrace. I always try to get different angles and perspectives for every wedding wherever it is so that there is a variation in shots and I capture as much as the beauty of the venues as I possibly can.

The photo above and below are photos from the ceremony that show the love and bond between the happy couple. I love it when the couple naturally interacts as it makes my job much easier and more enjoyable.

The photo above is a rear view of the ceremony and another panoramic shot. As you can see, an early wedding at Malcesine Castle ensures that we have a pure blue sky in the panorama. As the day progresses the sun comes across the lake from left to right as you look at the photo above, therefore bleaching it out somewhat. However, there are some great shots to be had still using the sun as you will see on a few later blogs I have coming up from Malcesine in the next few weeks. The photo below needs no caption haha!

The photo above and below are of the bride and groom having ten minutes with me and enjoying the views and scenery. I like the sepia effect below on this particular shot so decided to use this one rather than the colour version.

The above shot is one of the boys relaxing. A few well-placed kilt re-arrangements were made here but we got there eventually! The next set of shots are some more of the happy couple around the castle, with attention to Vicky and her dress too. Beautiful!

The photo above is a filter and is a different angle from a lot of the shots you see of weddings at this location. I am always looking to do something new. You may see a lot of re-creations of this shot on others websites once they see this! Throughout the years I have seen lots of photographers copy some of the shots I have done here and I am honoured that they do this. I also have taken a few ideas from a few other photographers too and put my imprint on them – this is the way it goes. However, if you really like a particular photographer then my advice would be to book them and not ask another photographer to recreate a full wedding in someone else’s style. It’s impossible. I hope you like the shots below of the couple heading down to the bottom of the castle before we embarked upon a really relaxing and beautiful boat trip.

The next set of shots, above and below is a few highlights of the boat trip on the wonderful Siora Veronica. This, in my opinion, is the best way to travel around the lake and combine a wonderful cruise with some fabulous photography opportunities.

Isn’t it amazing where a pen and paper can come from for an impromptu shot haha? Through gritted teeth, John held this and even managed to smile! The set of photos below are a few street shots and one in the Palace di Capitano on the way to the reception venue the Prima Luna Rossa Hotel.

I enjoy going to the lakeside venues where we can stop and take some photographs. As you can see from the photo above and the few below, this gives me the chance to capture priceless memories for all guests as well as the happy couple. I like the little fishing boat in the background of the two shots below. I photoshopped it out in a few photos but I decided to use the ones I left it in as I think it gives the photo a really lovely authenticity.

After a wonderful relaxed meal, the bride and groom cut the cake, had another kiss (above) and then got down to the serious business of a knees up which as you can see below was a good night. I stayed and had a beer (or two) as usual after a really long, hot and tiring day and managed to socialise and relax for an hour before I headed back to my digs. I wish Vicky and John a happy and healthy marriage and send my love to them all and their family and friends. Watch out for my next blog post from Sorrento!

Jenna & Alex – Villa Balbianello Lake Como Wedding

What can I say about this beautiful wedding location that hasn’t been said before? As you probably know, this villa has been the setting for various movies including Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (2002) and Casino Royale (2006). Add to that the fact that this was the weekend of the spectacular firework festival and you will agree that this was the weekend to be on Lake Como with the rich and famous people driving some beautiful classic cars up and down the road. For this wedding, I opted to stay a 20-minute drive up the mountains in a little village called San Fedele Intelvi which was incredibly peaceful and picturesque. As the World Cup was happening too I had the pleasure of lots of Swiss fans to keep me company during England’s 6-1 hammering of Panama. Great days! The two images below are of one of the groomsmen practising the guitar and of the groom walking up for the short boat trip to the island where the villa is located.

A very poignant ceremony took place here and it was truly heartwarming and memorable for many reasons, some close to home too which made this wedding truly special. As you can see from the two images below, Jenna looked absolutely amazing and glowed in every sense. What a stylish dress eh?

The photo above shows the bridesmaids first reaction when she looked at the views and saw for the first time the spectacular setting of Villa Balbianello. I think my face looked like that many years ago when I first saw it too! Wow! The two images below were taken during the ceremony and I hope these show the truly wonderful nature of this setting.

I love it when the wedding ceremony itself is full of emotions. Sometimes nerves do get the better of people and it looks like they are not enjoying it, but for this ceremony, it was very meaningful and a celebration of life and of love. The five images below are of the ceremony itself and show the emotions, the character and the beauty of everything around us.

The fireworks on the lake took at two different shutter speeds for a different effect. I like the blur and effect of the shot above. I wish Jenna and Alex a lifetime of joy and happiness. Look out for my next beautiful wedding post as I did quite a few in 2018! Bye for now x

Chloe & Dave’s Sorrento Wedding

Sorrento & Amalfi Coast Wedding Photographer

Chloe & Dave were married at the Villa Fondi and had their reception at the Hotel Mediterraneo in Sant’ Agnello. Having had a pre-wedding shoot in the streets of Sorrento the previous day I was looking forward to a wonderful celebration of this young couple. As you can see from the wonderful pre-wedding shot below they are very much in love.

Wedding Photography in Sorrento, Italy. Wedding Photographer Villa Fondi, Sorrento Italy

Chloe and Dave were worried about the weather forecast for their big day. Up until early June, the weather in Sorrento had been a little patchy, to say the least, and the forecast for their wedding day was not good. Sometimes on the weather apps, they tend to hedge their bets but this time the reports seemed to be accurate. I always believe that on the day we will take it as it comes, go with it and enjoy everything regardless. This was the way it turned out. The three shots below are of the pretty bride Chloe in bridal preparation.

As you can see from the photos on this post, Chloe was a natural and I managed to work with the couple to get some really great photos. The photo below is a little bit of fun in the bridal prep hotel room before the serious business of a wedding began!

Wedding Photography in Sorrento, Italy. Wedding Photographer Villa Fondi, Sorrento Italy

The weather looked bright and it was warm when I arrived at the Villa Fondi but Versuvius was invisible as it was shadowed by the darkest clouds full of rain that I saw all year. I have added a nice retro filter to the photo below but you can still see the tempestuous clouds.

Wedding Photography in Sorrento, Italy. Wedding Photographer Villa Fondi, Sorrento Italy

The ceremony was a beautiful affair but the HUGE cloud was incoming with speed and the spits and spots soon became a little heavier towards the end of the ceremony. This was a shame as I had planned to do a few shots on the panoramic balcony but as the rain became heavier it soon became clear that this was not going to happen so after a few shots of the bride and groom at the Villa Fondi we all headed back to the reception where I hoped that we would get some breaks in the weather so that we could take some photographs in the beautiful surroundings of the Hotel Mediterraneo. The three shots below are of the ceremony and as you can see from the first shot, the clouds looked full of rain.

Back at the reception venue, the weather did clear up and we managed to utilise the surroundings quite well and get some nice family and friends shots as well as a few natural shots of the guests enjoying the wedding. The shot below is a photo I took at the Villa Fondi.

The shots below are of the panoramic view outside the Hotel Mediterraneo. I waited until the weather cleared up before I took out the bridal party to make the most of these wonderful views.

The shot above is Chloe’s beautiful wedding dress. I love this shot with Versuvius just in the background. I always try to capture a shot of the location for the couple and the shot below is an early evening shot of the coastline. I’ve added a filter to bring out the colours but I love the mood that this shot creates.

The two shots below speak for themselves. I wanted to show you the Hotel Mediterraneo set up and show what a great venue this is away from the hustle and bustle of the centre of Sorrento. If you are looking at a wedding in Sorrento have a look at this venue in Sant’ Agenello. It is a fantastic place for photos too! The last shot is a late evening shot of the cake – because of the weather the wedding was running late as inititally the meal was to be served on the rooftop but in the end the hotel opted for safety as the weather was intermittent. However, gladly, we managed to party on the roof later on and all I can say about the views is….WOW!!

Joanne & Gary married in the wonderful setting of Malcesine Castle, Lake Garda in the early summer of 2018. Having been booked for a full day for this wedding I really enjoyed the relaxed nature of the day which always helps me from a photography aspect. Jo and Gary are a friendly couple and I was made very welcome by their family and friends which I appreciated. The above image is a nice relaxed shot of the happy couple and the one below is of the bridesmaids looking very happy. I caught this one perfectly!

I have chosen to display a lot of black and white photos in this post. I love black and white photography and think that the mood black and white photos create is wonderful! I hope you enjoy this post and the stunning photographs within it. I started the day with bridal prep at a private villa not too far away from the castle. I enjoyed being in the villa as it was relaxed and not as cramped as a hotel bridal prep suite usually is. It meant that I could amble about and give the wedding party some space too which worked perfectly. The two photos below are of the lovely Jo getting ready for her big day with a shot of the brides shoes underneath those two photos.

I enjoy bridal prep when everyone is relaxed. I don’t usually do anything other than capture what is happening. I know that people have enough on their minds so I keep bridal prep nice and simple and fuss-free. Everyone that knows me knows that I am a stress-free person when photographing weddings and generally go with the flow to capture your wedding, not just a wedding. The above photo is a nice close up of the brides dress being fastened and the shot below is of the lucky and happy groom Gary!

The picture above is a lovely natural shot of the bridal party arriving in the picturesque streets of Malcesine and the one below is one that captures the moment that Gary was pleased his wife to be had turned up looking stunning. The ceremony was a fun-filled and emotional time and through my lens I could see that this meant a lot to them both which I notice at every wedding I photograph. I kind of bounce off that connection and that in turn makes your wedding photographs a level above!

The photo above needs no introduction. This is one of many stunning panoramic shots of the couple. I try to capture the beauty of the venue and surroundings and this shot captures the stunning scenery of Malcesine and Monte Baldo. Look at that amazing scenery rivalled equally by a stunning wedding dress. Wow! As I have given you the wow factor in the scenery above I thought it only fair to give you a photo of the lake too with a nice retro filter I like to use. I hope you like it.

The photo above is my favourite type of photo – natural where I just capture what is happening without any overly posed or pouted or contrived shots. If it were up to me I would 100% adopt this fly on the wall style at every wedding as I believe the best results are when your photos are just you and your wedding! The photo below needs no explanation haha!

The photo above is of the couple on the Siora Veronica. This is a lovely way to tour the lake and MUCH better for photography than the other plastic seated cramped boats. I am biased of course as it is lovely to be able to move about and capture some great photos on this boat. The reception dancing and partying took place at the venue nearest to the castle – Paradiso Perduto restaurant. I enjoy this outdoor venue and have always been well accommodated and welcomed by the management and staff. The final photo is a cake cutting shot and although this was a long day with this amazing couple it was a really great celebration. I wish Jo and Gary such an amazing life together – two nicer people I could not have wished to meet. Keep a lookout for a Sorrento wedding on my next post soon and if you wish to book me for your 2019 or 2020 Italy wedding then please get in touch now.

Torri del Benaco, Lake Garda Wedding

Julie and Garry were married in the beautiful lemon grove inside Torri del Benaco castle. I enjoy going to different places around Lake Garda and over the years I have been very lucky to go to many venues. Having met the lovely couple a few days earlier I was taken by their great personalities and their attitude of them enjoying their wedding day whatever! As a photographer, it is great when people are relaxed and are willing to go with the flow as I feel this suits my style better and also makes for more natural photographs. The photograph below is of the dashing groom looking smart in his Sunday best!

As you can see from the photo below it was an emotional ceremony and it was beautifully obvious how much it all meant to the happy couple.

As you can see from the photos on this post we had a great afternoon and made the most of the weather and the location. The photo above is a back view of the ceremony and the photo below is Garry sneaking in a kiss for his beautiful wife.

When I am in any venue I always try my best to use each part of it and make people’s wedding photography as unique as I possibly can for them. It always helps when the bride and groom are flexible and happy to go with the flow. Time flies by very fast on the day itself so it is advisable to book as much time as you can to make your wedding photography natural and not rushed and to actually invest in it as a couple too. The photo above is the amazing view from the top of Torri castle and the photo below is inside the lemon grove with a few fish and some turtles if you look closely enough.

The photo above sums up the mood of this wedding and is a natural and genuine shot of a poignant moment in the speeches. Julie and Garry did it their way and it was very much a special, real and emotional afternoon with them. What an absolute pleasure it was to be part of this and I hope that they have a long and happy marriage ahead of them with best wishes from me. As it is the close season my thoughts are now to catching up with my blogs, tax and sleep before the wedding season recommences at Easter.

Sarah & Michael’s Glorious Gozo & Malta Wedding Day

Wedding Photography by David Gravel Photography  Palazzo Parisio Naxxar Malta

What can I say about this wedding in Gozo and Malta? It was such an amazing day and in my opinion, Sarah and Michael had probably one of the best wedding days of the year as it was so relaxed (!) (more to come on that one haha!!)

Having booked me well in advance I had the pleasure of meeting this happy couple when they came across earlier in the year to stay at St Julian’s Bay to do some planning. Luckily Michael had family from Gozo and I have to say that the proposal was one of the most romantic I have heard about so well done for that Michael! I spent a lovely hour or so with the happy couple and told them it wouldn’t be too long until we met again 6 months later. This turned out to be the case. Where did the time go?

Wedding Photography by David Gravel Photography; Wedding Photographer in Gozo & Malta

After a pleasant pre-wedding meeting I made my way on the day itself to bridal prep in Gozo. A lovely bridesmaid opened the door to such a pleasant and characteristic house inside and it was the perfect place for my opinion for bridal preparation. Everyone was buzzing about, there was lots of room for me and the videographer and people were chilled out and happy which for me is most of the battle as a photographer! The two shots above are of the dresses and of course, the beautiful bridesmaids having a glass of fizz.

Wedding Photography by David Gravel Photography; Wedding Photographer in Malta & Gozo

You will see from the shots I have included in this blog that from the moment I stepped into Bridal prep at 930am until I left at around 9:30pm it was a wonderful celebration and a fabulous day. The shot above is a stunning silhouette photograph of the stunning bride.

The photo below is of the breathtaking marriage venue of St Georges Basilica Gozo and as this post continues you will see lots more photographs of this fantastic venue.

Wedding Photography by David Gravel Photography St Georges Basilica Gozo; Malta Weddings

Following Bridal Prep I managed to travel with some of the bridal party to the church. Wow! What an amazing place it is (see above!). I went inside a few times in the summer when I was in Gozo to have a look around and do some research. I am like that! I always ensure I do plenty of research at a new venue and for weddings where I have not been there before I arrive 2 or 3 days before the wedding to ensure I have lots of time to relax and look around and get something different and unique from each location.

Wedding Photography by David Gravel Photography St Georges Basilica Gozo; Malta Weddings

Get me to the church on time. Usually, the bride sings this but on this occasion, the groom and all of the guests had been collected by coach from Malta and ferried across on the Gozo Channel. With the traffic and heat on the day in Malta what could go wrong? Tick tock….tick….tock…..where is the groom? Tock tick….tock….tick….where are the guests!? As you can see from the photos of the ceremony below the whole day was good humoured and fun and I was so pleased that everyone turned up haha.

Wedding Photography by David Gravel Photography St Georges Basilica Gozo; Malta Weddings

Sarah and her bridesmaids arrived before everyone looking absolutely stunning. All of the girls really shone on the day but none more so than the beautiful bride. And because things didn’t quite go according to plan on the timing front I felt that this produced more natural shots once everyone had arrived and the ceremony had got underway.

Wedding Photography by David Gravel Photography St Georges Basilica Gozo; Malta Weddings

I really enjoyed watching the interaction between everyone especially the happy couple. It was clear everyone was close family and friends and it was really good to be part of the day.  I worked alongside a local Maltese videographer Troy who seemed to get the girls swooning. He was a great guy and we had a good day together.

After the ceremony, we went onto a rooftop reception where there was a stunning panoramic view of Gozo. Were we happy with such a view…?? No….I did my Tom Cruise impression of Mission Impossible as a kind gentleman from the Basilica took the videographer and I up to the roof up what can be described as narrow and steep steps. Normally it would have been ok, but when you have cameras weighed over your shoulders navigating the steps seemed a little precarious, albeit GREAT FUN! What a view once I got up there. Wow! The photo below shows my view.

After a nice relaxed canapé reception, we all headed back towards the Gozo ferry. I was looking forward to seeing people’s reaction to a bride and groom on the ferry. The photo above is of the wind just catching the brides veil as they look out over the blue lagoon at Comino. The photo below is the Palazzo Parisio in In-Naxxar, Malta. I don’t need to tell you how amazing it is as a wedding venue do I? Just look at the next set of photos and make up your own mind.

We used the whole location to its best and I managed to capture some wonderful shots for the wedding party to cherish forever. It was a long day, a really fun day and also a rewarding day too and I wish Sarah and Michael such a happy future together and a wonderful married life.

Now….this blog post will self-destruct in 5 seconds…….

Andrew & Amy – Malcesine Castle Wedding

Andrew and Amy were married in a beautiful summer ceremony at Malcesine Castle in Lago di Garda. I was privileged enough to meet the happy couple and their parents a year before their wedding and the feeling was that time had really flown by once we met at our pre-wedding meeting. It was a pleasure to be in the company of Amy, Andrew, their family and friends because everyone spent all day smiling and enjoying every moment.

Wedding Photography by Italian Wedding Photography by David Malcesine Castle, Lake Garda, Italy

Andrew and Amy were married in Malcesine Castle followed by an intimate and private open air reception at Bar Pizzeria Da Pedro  which I used to call the ‘bat cave’ as per the classic 1960’s Batman series with Adam West and Burt Ward. Da Pedro has a nice atmosphere, the food is great and the staff are always friendly and accommodating. The above photo is from bridal prep and has a really eye catching black and white filter. The photo below is the bridal perfume. I always try to capture as much as I can of your unique wedding day including the small details. I have added some filters to this gallery so you can get a taste for some of the variations of original photos that I work on (you receive all versions too on your USB!)

Wedding Photography by Italian Wedding Photography by David Malcesine Castle, Lake Garda, Italy

I have added a few photo’s of the bride arriving as having quickly scanned through other posts I can see there are varied other photos from Malcesine weddings so I decided to add a few different aspects of the day to this post. The two photos below are of the happy bride and her father arriving at the castle.

The ceremony was a humorous and personal affair with much laughter and interaction between the translator, officiant and the couple. It was clear there was lots of love in the air and from my angle it was a joy to witness the meaning behind this happy union. I am a sentimental old fool sometimes and I do really like it when I can, not only see, but also feel something special between people. Having photographed many hundreds of weddings throughout the UK and Europe I still get butterflies and a buzz on the morning of each wedding. The photograph below just shows the natural joy and interaction between Andrew and Amy.

Wedding Photography by Italian Wedding Photography by David Malcesine Castle, Lake Garda, Italy

Following the ceremony I led Andrew and Amy around the castle and captured some magnificent shots before we headed to the lakeside with the bridal party and parents. The photo’s below were taken in the castle grounds taking advantage of the amazing panoramic views.

The photo’s below show a little example that even if your reception venue isn’t located by the lakeside, by allowing plenty of time you can still get the best out of this remarkable scenery and ensure your wedding photographs are varied, natural and special. In the black and white photo below I did take out the fisherman in his boat in post-processing as well as include one with him in it. My preference is the natural photo below.

Following the reception and cake cutting I left the happy couple to enjoy their day and their time in Italy. I wish Andrew and Amy such happiness and joy in their married life and raise a glass to a long and healthy life filled with magical memories. Ciao for now and look for my next blog post which will have some Maltese flavour! Enjoy the beautiful sun-kissed bridal shot below.

Angela & Grant – Magical Malta Wedding

Angela and Grant celebrated their marriage with an intimate ceremony in Malta overlooking the islands of Comino and Gozo. This was a late afternoon wedding and as the sun was almost setting it cast a beautiful light on the Mediterranean as the couple exchanged vows. The newly refurbished Dolmen Hotel in Bugibba was the chosen venue. Having lived there and seen the refurbishment work take place over the winter I have to say what a good job the Dolmen are doing in what is a major revamp of the hotel and the area it is located in.

Wedding Photographer Dolmen Hotel, Bugibba Malta

The only downside to the sunset ceremony was that the time meant that the sun was in the couple’s eyes. However, I did document this lovely wedding fully and did my best with what was such difficult light to work in. As you can see from the above photo of the dashing groom the sun was behind him. An earlier ceremony here would have been perfect. Having photographed a few later weddings here, the sun is in the wrong place should you require panoramic sea shots afterwards. The photo below shows the set up of the ceremony. If you look to the top left you can see how bright the late evening sun was shining.  A tip for anyone who plans outdoor ceremonies at ANY venue is to check where the sun is and perhaps check to see if there is an alternative layout to the ceremony set up.

Wedding Photography by Italian Wedding Photography by David Malta; Wedding Photographer Dolmen Hotel, Bugibba Malta; Wedding Photographer in Bugibba Malta; Malta Wedding Photographer; Weddings in Malta,

The ceremony was a swift affair – the traffic in Malta is absolutely awful and in truth the roads are even more shocking. Malta has such a beautiful history and is an amazing place for a wedding but the fact is that there are 2 cars to every 1 person on the island and the roads are pretty much gridlocked in parts most of each day. Ensure you plan timing and travel to perfection with someone who has local knowledge. I flippantly mentioned the traffic to the guests as we were waiting a while for the registrant to arrive and guess what? She got stuck in traffic haha! Malta and Gozo offer you amazing and scenic locations for your wedding but you really need to plan your journey and allow lots of time if you are going to travel around.  Even if you are just a guest in another resort remember to allow plenty of time.

The photo below shows a tear running down the cheek of Angela, who, as I am sure you will all agree, was a stunning bride.

Photography by Italian Wedding Photography by David; Wedding Photographer Dolmen Hotel, Bugibba Malta

Once the happy couple were married we took lots of photos by the sea and around the Dolmen hotel. A really great evening and a lovely reception was had by all! The two shots below show part of the ceremony with the ring exchange and a tender moment during the groom’s vows.

Because of the nature and difficulty of the light I used a lot of fill in flash to do the silhouette family shot below. I added a nice filter to the 2nd shot below which caught the sun setting behind Comino.

As you can see from the above pictures I managed to capture some really beautiful photos of the couple and also got many more of the guests and dancing and festivities. I had a really fabulous 4 hours or so with Angela and Grant, their friends and family. I wish them both every happiness and a successful married life together in wedded bliss.

Keep an eye out for my upcoming blog posts with a few more Lake Garda weddings from summer 2017. I will soon be doing a special blog post on the pitfalls of guests cameras, phones and tablets so look out for this as it will contain some good tips!

Sophie & Kieran’s Sun-kissed Sorrento Wedding

Sorrento Wedding Photographer

Sophie and Kieran shared a magical Sorrento wedding day at the Villa Fondi in Sorrento and then the amazing Grand Hotel Nastro Azzurro up in the hills of Sorrento. Sophie and Kieran invited their family and friends to enjoy their fun filled, pool soaked and genuinely romantic wedding day. It was a pleasure to be in their company. I had such fun on this day as the two venues are amongst my favourites in Italy. The Villa Fondi De Sangro at Piano di Sorrento affords the privacy and the tranquil setting that the Cloisters can’t. Albeit that the Cloisters is a tranquil and beautiful place, the hustle and bustle for me sometimes (not all of the time) spoils it from a photography point of view.

Wedding Photographer Villa Fondi Sorrento; Wedding Photographer in Sorrento Italy

As you can see from Sophie’s plush slippers above my day started with bridal prep in the Hotel Mediterrano in Sorrento before a slow taxi ride to the Villa Fondi (the traffic was busy as usual). A lovely smiley and natural ceremony ensued. It was wonderful from where I was standing to see two people who were getting married and committing to one another with love. Once the ceremony had finished we spent some quality time in the Villa Fondi before we were all happy to escape the intense heat to the quiet and classy Grand Hotel Nastro Azzurro. Tasty canapés and drinks were enjoyed in a relaxed sun soaked atmosphere on the terrace before we were all called down for the main meal in the gardens. The three photos below show the scenery of Villa Fondi and also how amazing (albeit slightly hazy) the weather was.

There is not much I can say about the Hotel Nastro Azzurro except how FABULOUS it is. Peroni Nastro Azzuro is also a good cool drink on these hot days in Sorrento so I suppose to have a hotel and a favourite Italian beer named the same is one of those mental things that cheer me up in a silly way! This hotel is pure class and offers an amazing location for a classy and sophisticated wedding. The photos below are ones that I chose from the ceremony to show the happiness of the couple and the scenery of the villa.

I really enjoyed meeting and sitting with Sophie and Kieran with their family and friends and having some interesting chats as well as working hard and doing my best to get what Sophie and Kieran had asked for. This wedding was easy as everyone was really natural and just got on with it so my job was very relaxed and laid back because it was easy just to capture what was happening. Lots of good banter and plenty of people willing just to get on with it and enjoy a unique occasion in such a splendid setting. I have added the photos below to showcase the setting further and also portray the natural aspect of my photography as when this happens I simply take photos and it makes my job easy.

I have added the two photos below  to show the bridal bouquet, dress detail, and jewellery in one shot as well as adding a filter afterwards which I think highlights the beauty of this setting.

During the course of the day as usual, I had plenty of banter with the groom and best man. Once we had reached the hotel Nastro Azzurro we were eventually seated in view of their pool. Of course I had to mention the time I remember a bride jumping in the pool in her dress at the same venue and although Sophie wasn’t keen, not surprisingly the groom and best man were! It was a sweltering day and every time the guests visited the toilets they had to walk by that amazing cool pool, so it was only a matter of time before Kieran was jumping in! To be fair to the hotel staff and management they truly couldn’t have been more accommodating. They even brought towels afterwards! The photos below show the breathtaking setting of the wedding reception in the Grand Hotel Nastro Azzuro.

I potter about during the day and try my best to capture the moments. The photo below was a sneaky kiss between the happy couple. I am always watching out for the natural interaction as it’s not the same when you have to ask or set this up. Usually, if it’s a case of setting this up, I don’t do it as it really doesn’t fit with my style or my personality. Experience has taught me that you can’t set this kind of shot up in truth – it happens or not!

Wedding Photography by Italian Wedding Photography by David Grand Hotel Nastro Azzuro, Sorrento Italy

So…on the theme of setting up my idea on the shots below was to have the bride and bridesmaids walking naturally and chatting. Sadly the resident cat liked the wedding dress and attacked it at random (not in a bad way) so I stopped the girls as they got to this tree as I thought it looked really colourful alongside the bridesmaids’ yellow dresses. The two bridal party shots below are exactly what I had set out to do – natural interaction and also pure happiness and enjoyment.

At the end of this day I was tired and hot but happy. I wanted to share something with my audience in this post. Weddings like this make me realise why I do this and restore my faith in not only people and the sanctity of marriage and the ultimate commitment, but also my energy and enthusiasm to keep improving and to continue to document people’s wedding days in the best way that I can as a photographer and as a person/personality. Keep your eyes peeled now for my next Malta wedding blog after my winter break/hibernation! The two shots below are of the cake with a filter as I tried to do something different with the colours of the cake and the cutting of the cake.

I have chosen these three shots of the first dance in the evening sunlight. Kieran had previously tried the Patrick Swayze lift from  the movie Dirty Dancing but it didn’t quite come off so we went for a safer mode of dancing and I hope the bond, love and happiness of Sophie and Kieran comes across in these shots.

Stephanie & Aaron Cloisters of San Francesco Sorrento Wedding

Stephanie and Aaron booked me for a short coverage for their wedding in Sorrento. They were married at the Chiostro di San Francesco. Having met them both the day before for a beer and a little pre-wedding meeting I could see that they were a really lovely family and very nice people so I was looking forward to spending a few hours with them. The above shot needs no explaining while the shot below is the excited bride arriving.

Wedding Photography by Italian Wedding Photography by David Cloisters of San Francesco

There are good and bad things about spending a short amount of time with people from my perspective as a photographer. I will share my thoughts – a full day allows me to potter about and get more natural photographs over a gradual amount of time rather than rush through a shot list. With a full day I get the chance to try my best to get a little of everything. In fairness this lovely couple actually didn’t have much of a shot list – they wanted me to keep things unobtrusive and be inconspicuous (we had a laugh about this the day before – see their comments at the foot of this post!). Usually when I book shorter coverage I get inundated from the couples with millions of shots to do which really deflects from the natural and candid aspect of what I do the best. The good thing about short days is that there’s not a huge amount of photo’s to look through and edit. I encourage potential clients to book as long as they can – not because I earn more money – this is irrelevant to me in truth. I encourage it so I can get the best out of their wedding (which is a once in a lifetime one chance event) and also I try to keep my style as natural as possible which is really difficult on a short day’s booking as I don’t really get the chance to develop a good rapport with guests like I do when I do my thing on a full day. I am happy to cover the ceremony only and happy to book as many hours as you really require and I will ALWAYS be honest with you and give you options once you tell me about your plans, timings, guest numbers and requirements upon booking me. In this case Stephanie and Aaron’s wedding really flowed naturally and their enjoyment and enthusiasm rubbed off on me.

The shot below is another bridal arrival shot.

Wedding Photography by Italian Wedding Photography by David Cloisters of San Francesco

As you can see from the shots below of the ceremony, Stephanie was determined to enjoy her big day and make the most of it and for me this was a really easy job because they just did their thing and totally enjoyed the moments without worrying about anything or anyone else. As a photographer with a huge amount of experience this really makes a difference when people “get married” rather than “put a wedding on“. I throughly enjoyed the time that I spent with this wedding.

While I am comparing the things I do and do not like as a photographer I will share my views on the Cloister’s. Firstly it’s a superb and magnificent location from a photography aspect as the scenery speaks for itself. I have no problem at all from an aesthetic perspective. My problem with this venue is twofold – one….the public get in the way during weddings and typically the people in the brightest most gaudy dress get right in my view behind the bride! Many many venues around Italy are touristy which I have no problem with, but most just lock/block them out for the ceremony only (I can see with the amount of weddings here Cloister’s can’t stop people from coming in as this would mean it would be blocked off most of the day!). I can only blur and clone so much out and although I do tidy up photo’s, my service doesn’t price up the hours required for taking out people from shots – if I truly charged for this amount of time then my prices would probably go up 50%+. My second problem with this venue is the fact that it is, in my opinion and experience, a little conveyor belt – you get 15 mins or so for the ceremony (make sure you arrive on time!) and then perhaps 15/20 mins or so afterwards before you are ushered out of the way before the guests for the next wedding arrive (if one is booked in afterwards). I personally (as a photographer) don’t think enough time is allowed, especially for the larger weddings where there are lots of guests. I will be honest – I always find myself rushing here compared to other venues and that for me isn’t good and I am sure the bride and groom also feel slightly that it is a case of NEEEEXXXTTT when we are ushered away quickly before the next bride arrives. I am being 100% honest – love the venue and the staff are always top class – I just think that it’s difficult as a photographer to truly get the best from this venue on the day itself. I always do my best and give 100%. In an ideal world upon booking, the smaller weddings will get enough allocated time and perhaps the larger ones can get a little extra and then the next wedding is perhaps booked slightly later to allow a little more respect to each wedding rather than conveyor belting them. In a commercial world I know this will never happen. Nevertheless, most weddings I have ever photographed here have really enjoyed it with only a few that felt slightly rushed. If you plan your wedding ceremony here I do recommend it but feel you should know what you are getting and then give you the information to ask the questions and perhaps allocate correct time (even if this cost’s extra I think it would be worth it).

I have done something different with the above photo as you can see and the photo below doesn’t really need an explanation does it? Stephanie looked absolutely stunning and I loved her veil. I managed to get some lovely photo’s of this couple with their son and got lots of family and friend shots as best as I could.

I will end this blog post with my usual best wishes to this really great couple for a long, love-filled and harmonious married life. They are a perfect little family and I wish them so much happiness together. I will leave you with the couple’s message to me after their wedding day as I can’t say any more really can I?

Lauren & Stuart were married in Malcesine Castle earlier in the summer in 2017. As you can see from the photographs on this post, it was a warm and sunny day on Lake Garda. This year saw better weather compared to last year when it rained a lot more than usual. I managed to get away with not having any bad weather at any of my weddings. I saw a little rain at a few during receptions but nothing to spoil any wedding or put a spanner in the works of my photography. Fingers crossed for 2018! Read on and click some of the links for useful information, useless information, a few surprises and my quirky and dark sense of humour!

Lauren had some bridal prep at the Hotel Maximillan in Val di Sogno. I like it here as there is usually a decent amount of space in the rooms and the hotel has beautiful views.  I have put a nice shot of the dress above along with a few bridal prep photo’s with added filters to show a little variation in my work. All photo’s on my blog posts are vastly reduced in resolution for web purposes but I hope you all like the sample of the many wedding photographs I presented to Lauren and Stuart.

Lauren & Stuart had booked me 16 months before their wedding so took advantage of my early booking discount of 5% for weddings that are booked in a calendar year or more before the big day! Having met them the day earlier for their pre-wedding meeting I was delighted that they were prepared just to go with the flow and let me get on with documenting their wedding than giving me a long shot list. I was pleased with this approach as I feel it adds a more natural scope to my photography. The photo below is the mother of the bride and bridesmaids arriving looking happy and glowing in their bright colours.

The above photo is of Lauren arriving in the tuk tuk and I have added a filter to it so it gives a different feel/mood. The photo below gives that unique black and white feel to the bride and father arriving at the castle. I have added a few more shots of the arrivals to give a feel for the story of Lauren & Stuarts day.

The shot above shows the feel of this special wedding day as it was just fun and a relaxed occasion. During the course of the winter months I am going to do a monthly blog post with a few tips from other suppliers such as make up and hairdressers. My biggest bug bear of the last few years is mobile phone/tablet camera’s – I feel this is getting out of control to the point where it really spoils some of the key photo’s and I have had to go to quite a few people in ceremonies more than ever this year to turn out video lights on phones (in the daytime!). Look out for examples and a very honest and thought provoking post coming up because my “the more photo’s the merrier” attitude is now wearing extremely thin. As you can see from the photo below Lauren and Stuart had a very natural rapport and are very much in love.

Wedding Photography by Italian Wedding Photography by David Malcesine Castle, Lake Garda, Italy

The selection of photo’s below show the beauty and charm and also the AMAZING views in and around Malcesine Castle. I hope you like the small selection I have chosen to give an overall feel and view of this wedding day.

I have added the photo above as a week before this wedding there was a really bad storm with strong winds. Sadly a turret had fallen from the castle so some of it was cordoned off. Thankfully no one was hurt but you can see from the above shot the damage it did to the gazebo at the front – totally ripped this to shreds. Luckily this has now been replaced although from a photography point of view I preferred it with the gazebo roof off as the natural light makes for much better photo’s in my opinion. Malcesine Castle still looked spectacular and wasn’t a ghetto! Hopefully my photo’s will show that a storm can’t dampen the spirit of Italian amorè.

When we had finished in the castle, the couple walked down the castle steps to no confetti (it is now banned -I am still getting used to this!) Bubbles are really tame in comparison – I can’t lie! From a photography aspect the confetti shot has always been a great shot in general so it is a shame. The above shots are of the bride and the couple around one of the landmarks of Malcesine. After a nice boat trip around the lake we then headed to one of my favourite restaurants Al Corsaro. Mario and his staff are amazing and the food here is always fabulous too. The location, in my opinion, is probably one of the best in Malcesine. As you can see from the photo’s below everyone had a great time and my day ended with the first dance and a well earned glass of beer! Good times!

Rachel and Ben came out to Malta in Late 2016 for their pre-wedding shoot which you can see on a previous blog post. Time flew by and it wasn’t long before I was meeting them at their villa for a pre-wedding meeting and a cup of tea! The weather had just started to get from red-hot to scorching in June, so it was a very warm day on the wedding day itself. Rachel and Ben had decided to get married in a very lovely intimate ceremony at the Xara Palace Hotel in Mdina with a reception meal in the panoramic Palazzo de Piro.

After some Bridal preparation I joined the guests and groom on the vintage Maltese bus to head on the 40 minute drive to Mdina. Everyone was in good spirits and despite the crunching and cracking of the gears and the struggle up some of the steep hills in Malta, the bus made it and dropped us all off at Mdina Gate. For those of you not lucky enough to have been to this ancient amazing city click the links and read about the 4000 year history of Mdina and Rabat. Malta has such variation in terms of history, culture, landscape and traditions – it’s a great island (along with Gozo) for a holiday and a wedding/honeymoon.

The ceremony itself was an emotional one – tears, laughter and very much a close family and friend intimacy which makes the job of a photographer easier in my opinion – a close natural bond with no drama’s makes for lots of personal and special moments during the course of a wedding day in my experience.

A short walk from the Xara Palace to the Palazzo de Piro was enjoyed by all of the guests and we had the chance to take group shots outside the cathedral in Mdina much to all of the tourists amusement. This was followed by canapés and drinks and some photo’s of the happy couple in the streets of Mdina.

After enjoying a really tasty meal and having some more photographs in the streets of Mdina I drove the father of the bride’s hire car back to the villa (long story!) and enjoyed a coffee whilst awaiting the first dance and cake cutting. I hope you like the small selection of shots I have added to this blog post. I tried to get a flavour of Mdina.

Rachel & Ben’s Pre-wedding Shoot in Mdina

Wedding Photographer Malta

Wedding Photographer in Rabat & Mdina, Malta

Rachel and Ben were getting married in 2017 in Malta. I met a few potential client’s during the winter in Malta with people coming out to see family, do some research, have a winter break etc. Rachel and Ben came out to finalise all of their plans in November 2016 and we decided that this was a good time for their pre-wedding shoot as opposed to doing it when they were going to be mega-busy a few days before their wedding. As you can see from the photo’s below, Rachel and Ben are very much in love and are a fabulous couple. I am really looking forward to the big day itself! In the photo below I attempted to capture the typical Maltese scenery and keep it simple.

In the photo below I put on my telephoto lens, stepped back a little and tried to capture some natural interaction between the happy couple. I think looking at some of the photo’s on this page this worked well and I managed to get a good range of shots, lots natural, a few slightly posed!

So you will be looking at the photo below and wondering if I have photoshopped in the blue sky – no! I didn’t. Mid November and it was this good! The weather was shorts and T-shirt weather and after the shoot I did in fact sit in the square outside Mdina gate and have a leisurely coffee and enjoyed the afternoon sun.

The remit on this shoot was to be relaxed, natural and capture the beauty of the location, enjoy the sun and keep this unique to Rachel and Ben so the next three photo’s below capture the beauty of the surroundings in Mdina. I hope you like the ambience and vibrance of the scenes?

I love black and white photography and think that the mood it creates on some photo’s is breathtaking, so when I asked Ben to stand behind me and do his thing, Rachel’s reaction instantly told me that her radiant and natural look would suit black and white. And it worked too I believe – it is a very natural shot.

As you can see from the above photo, I like to add a few filters that I think will enhance the beauty of the surroundings that are unique to every location. On the opposite side, on the two photo’s below, the sunshine was very strong and brought such a healthy glow to not only my willing subjects, but also the backgrounds and buildings too.

So after we had discussed Rachel and Ben’s wedding plans, we had a good walk around Mdina and it was fairly quiet for November, so we were not overly bothered by tourists, although naturally, a few did stop and watch us along the way but people were very polite. The shot below captures the Maltese mood in the building.

All good things must come to an end for now, so towards the end of the pre-wedding shoot where we captured the streets, the churches, the engagement ring and much more I decided to get up close and personal and take the natural shot below and then go for a barnstorming moody, intimate shot to end our pleasant walk around Mdina. I am happy I managed to vary the photo’s and create some special memories for Rachel and Ben with these shots – now its time for them to soon be married and see how amazing the photo’s are when there is a breathtaking wedding dress involved!

Natalie & Paul Sorrento Wedding

I was delighted to join Natalie & Paul for their wedding in Sorrento. Having met them for a pre-wedding shoot I was relaxed and happy in their company and knew that they were going to enjoy their wedding day and have a good time. The above photo is a photo of the Sorrento coastline from the Hotel Belair. The photo below is the bridal bouquet and shoes. I always look for the opportunity to capture not only the moments but the details too.

Natalie and Paul were married at the Villa Fondi De Sangro in Piano di Sorrento and had their reception at Don Pedro Farm and were accompanied by many friends and family. Paul was a character and throughout the day we all had such a good time and everyone was laughing constantly. From a photography perspective this helps me enormously as everyone forgets about me so I can go about getting lots of natural shots without it being overly contrived. From the moment I met them, Natalie and Paul were good fun and truly very lovely people too and I did really enjoy spending the day with them to the point where I had a few beers at the end of my work and got a taxi home with some of their guests who left a little earlier. When I can build up a rapport with everyone like I did here and stand and chat afterwards over a beer I know it’s been a good day! That also goes for the rapport I have with the owner and staff at Don Pedro too. Every time I work with Don Pedro the day goes smoothly and everyone can’t do enough to help me. I highly recommend them simply as they put character and individuality into your wedding and I have never seen them conveyor belt or treat each wedding exactly the same unlike some other venues and wedding planners/suppliers.

I had an early start for this full day booking so I went to the Hotel Belair to begin bridal prep. As there were 8 bridesmaids and a flower girl the bridal prep hotel room was a hive of activity and was buzzing. Despite all of this Natalie remained as calm as she could and  just let it all happen which was good for me as I like to potter about during bridal prep rather than pose people. The shot below is a photo of all of the bridesmaids on the terrace of the Hotel Belair.

The photo above is a shot of the bride, flower girl and bridesmaids on the steps of the Belair. I have to say everyone was really kind and all of the bridesmaids were really helpful and accommodating with me which really helped make things run smoothly. The photo below is the wedding car.

I got into the minibus with the bridesmaids and headed to Villa Fondi to capture shots of the grooms party and the guests arriving. As you can see from the shots so far the weather was wonderful. Once I arrived at Villa Fondi Paul was in good form and I think the photo below needs no explanation! This was the theme of the day – happiness, lightheartedness and fun amongst really close family and friends – fantastic!

I got a few shots of the groom and groomsmen, guest arriving, and various other bits and pieces before the beautiful Natalie arrived and as you can see from the photographs below she looked stunning.

As Natalie made her way into the ceremony everyone was smiling and Paul looked really proud and was providing a few laughs and jokes throughout the ceremony. Below is a shot of the nice scenic views from Villa Fondi.

The shot above is Paul finally getting the wedding ring on his beautiful new wife and the two shots below this are more shots of this great couple in the scenery of Villa Fondi.

After confetti time and a few scenic shots on the terrace of Hotel Belair (see below) we headed up into the hills of Sorrento to Don Pedro Farm.

The shot below shows how windy it was on the terrace but because it was so hot, this was a welcome breeze. The veil actually covered Natalie’s face much to Paul’s amusement and I managed to get a fun shot of this for them to savour.

The above shot shows the groom Paul enjoying the amazing views over Sorrento and the 2 shots below are romantic shots of the bride and groom enjoying a few quality moments together before we headed to the reception. I think candid and quiet moments like this are really good for the couple and it gives them chance to have a chat before the reception and gives me chance to do a few natural shots too.

We finally made our way up to Don Pedro Farm. There is never a dull moment with Don Pedro and as he and his band serenaded the happy couple the party really begun. Below is a shot of Don Pedro and Paul having some bromance time!

The above shot is a Romeo & Juliet shot looking up at the newlyweds and I managed to get plenty of shots of the bride, groom, a bit of fun in the window before a beautiful meal was presented. Don Pedro always has the class to ensure everything is perfect and to ensure I get a meal and a glass of wine too. Truly, they can’t do enough and I am so happy to have a rapport with the staff at Don Pedro Farm. Because I was booked for a full day I managed to get lots of shots and between courses took some portraits of each bridesmaid, but tried to make them different so they were not all the same scene and backdrop. The shot below is one of the relaxed portraits I did for the beautiful chief bridesmaid Angela.

As you can see from the sample of photographs I have placed on this blog everyone had a really good knees up. The shot above was a frame that the couple brought with them which one of the guests managed to hang on a tree so we did have some fun with this.

As for the photo’s below what can I say?! Tony from Don Pedro surprisingly has some really good moves! Very nice gentleman and ensures that every part of your reception from the food to the dancing is taken care of! Having been to Don Pedro on a few occasions I can honestly say that this is a great private venue to have your wedding reception in.
